The new MSc International Business prepares you for a successful career in the new international business arena by addressing issues of culture, politics, and economics, as well as equipping you with the personal attributes and analytical skills required for careers in the international business world.

As we enter a period of dramatic economic and political change, there has never been a more exciting time to study international business.

Today’s businesses operate in a dynamic global business environment in which managers have to deal with rapidly changing markets and a climate of tremendous uncertainty. These challenges call for new skills and new thinking as businesses strive to reinvent and innovate.

The MSc International Business has been carefully crafted to reflect the complex, dynamic and multifaceted character of this contemporary subject area.

The focus is very much on developing you as you acquire the skills and attributes necessary for the leaders, entrepreneurs and policy­makers of tomorrow in management, strategy and decision­ making and communication. You'll also develop a clear understanding of the environment in which international businesses operate in terms of economics, finance and governance, as well as politics and culture.

Research methods run through the whole course, preparing you for the dissertation in Term 3. The dissertation provides an opportunity for you to set yourself apart and demonstrate to potential employers a high level of thinking in a specialist area. This work is supported and supervised by experienced, research active members of staff, and may lead to publication.

If you choose to specialise in either marketing or finance through electives and a dissertation in these areas, you may be awarded the MSc International Business with Marketing or and MSc International Business with Finance.


The course is for graduates from any background/discipline who wish to pursue further study at Masters level. You may have completed an undergraduate Arts or Social Science degree, and now would like to gain a qualification in International Business. You may also have completed a business or management undergraduate degree and wish to pursue further Masters level study.


First Term (semester):
• Strategy and Globalisation (core module)
• International Business Culture and Communications (core module)
• Global Economics and Finance (core module)
• Research methods (part 1 – core module)

Second Term (semester):
• Intercultural Leadership and Personal Development (core module),
• Innovation, Entrepreneurship and the International Perspective (core module),
• International Finance (elective) Or International Marketing (elective)
• Research methods (part 2 – core module)

Third Term (semester):
• Dissertation (core)


Teaching is made up primarily of interactive workshops, group discussion and project work. The programme encourages you to reflect on your own experience and to apply your learning to real and relevant organisational contexts. Most staff delivering the course are senior lecturers (with PhD’s).

There will also be a number of visiting speakers, encouraging contact and learning from managers and practitioners with up-to-date expertise who work in a range of organisations in the public and private sectors.

Learning is supporting by our Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard).


There are no exams on this course. All summative assessment is based on a mix of assignments, presentations, reports, case study analysis, group work and reflective pieces. There is a final dissertation in semester 3.

What can I do next?

Students leave to pursue careers in management consultancy, international negotiations, working in the city (of London). With a strong emphasis on the development of employment skills, graduates go on to pursue various careers in business, management or policy making. Some also engage in further research on the MPhil/PhD programme.
