This progressive MSc is designed to orientate your earlier qualification towards a career in the wider banking and finance sectors.

Developments in banking and finance are happening rapidly, and with growing complexity. People working in this area must be able to understand and analyse activity, and also be able to anticipate future developments.

This includes knowledge of banking and financial systems and international markets as well as the role played by both commercial and central banks within the economy. Designed for UK and international students alike, this master's degree examines different international banking systems, money, investments and regulations which have become increasingly important in recent years.

The course is a fit for students from a variety of backgrounds, and does not require any previous training in finance. If you are interested in international banking and finance, investment management, retail banking, financial risk and regulation or the broader international financial sector, this is an excellent postgraduate path whatever your previous degree. This degree gives you the chance to choose optional modules that suit your interests. You can choose to study the straight MSc International Banking degree or you can also choose to specialise in one of the following:

  • MSc International Banking and Finance
  • MSc International Banking and Investment Management
  • MSc International Banking, Risk and Regulation

Teaching & Assessment

This is a full-time 12 month course. There are two start dates – September and January.

The course begins with a two week foundation module to bring all students up to a common minimum standard in banking and business statistics. The foundation module also introduces you to the University’s learning resources (e.g. the library and study skills support) and encourages you to work in 'teams' exchanging your intellectual assets for mutual benefit.

You take a number of core modules to develop your understanding of international banking, current issues in banking and finance, money, investments and banking systems, banking regulation, econometrics and quantitative methods. From this point, you have the opportunity to specialise by choosing your degree pathway and the optional modules that are relevant to it, aligned to your own personal interests and objectives.

How you will be taught

Modules are taught using lectures, workshops, group-work and student presentations. From time-to-time you may also hear from professionals working in the banking and financial sectors as part of our School Of Business employability services.

How you will be assessed

All modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and final assessment held at the end of each Semester with a re-sit opportunity shortly thereafter. Coursework may account for as much as 40-50% of the overall degree.
