If Environmental Sciences is your passion, the specialisation in Water and Environment would be a great choice. This specialisation aims at the insight needed to tackle problems such as climate change, flooding, eutrophication, chemical pollution, habitat fragmentation and bio-invasions. We provide you with the laboratory, field and assessment tools needed to protect ecosystem and human health in the context of multiple environmental pressures. 1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences or a related field of science.
2. A proficiency in English (Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following):
a. A TOEFL score of ≥575 (paper based) or ≥90 (internet based)
b. An IELTS score of ≥6.5
c. Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher

The specialisation of 'Water and Environment' focuses on human impacts (e.g. chemical emission) on nature, which matches very well with my personal interest in environmental issues. I did my undergraduate degree in Water Supply and Wastewater Engineering back in China, which is quite different from what I do now. I did find the compulsory courses a bit hard to me at first, but after undertstanding the mechanisms, the courses became easier.
I like the active interaction between students and teachers, either in class or during internship. They are willing to help, responds to email very quickly and really encourage interaction.
For me, the most challenging part was the difficulties I encountered during my research internships. For example, at a later stage during my first internship at the department of Environmental Science, I met some difficulties in analysing large datasets in R. However, having the good mentalities of trying to do a good job, staying positive, and asking supervisors for help when necessary were really helpful in these situations. I think due to strong motivation and enthusiasm, I could publish the paper as a first author in Science of the Total Environment (IF=5.6).
I am currently doing my second Master internship at RIVM on the topic of 'Towards an ecosystem service-based approach to assess the impact of chemical pollution on the filtration capacity of Dreissenid mussels in the Netherlands'.
Students with this degrees are able to understand and predict the impact of anthropogenic stressors on species including humans, and help with decision making processes. I am more motivated to carry out research on environmental science related topics after graduation, especially on the impacts of chemicals on ecosystems.
I like that the professors are very helpful whenever the students have questions. Even though sometimes the communications did not go well because of non-native language expressions, the professors would still try to assume, trying to understand. The courses are quite diverse and practical, and the design of the program is good because we can get in touch with the society through internships and orientations.It challenged me the most that the focus of my program is repetitive for the native students, but rather unfamiliar to international students. This brought a lot of stress initially to the international students like me.
I think the environment in Raboud is rather friendly for students to approach the teachers and other researchers. It is the merit to boost the research progress that students can get more information about the possible opportunities. The students are nice and open minded, but of course, people with the same mother tongue tend to stick together.
I am doing an internship in Austria about the influence of macrophytes toward the quality of dissolved organic matter in the Lower Austrian rivers.
I think this degree represents that the person is conversant with biogeochemistry of the ecosystem, and possesses deeper understanding about the water management. It is important when it comes to spatial governance, especially about the river channels across the border, the flood risks evaluation and the ethics of water management. To boost the water-wise cities, it is crucial to have the team with the ecologists that have this degree.
