Master's specialisation in Neurobiology

A mechanistic understanding of brain organization and function is the first step in conquering brain diseases. Are you motivated to work towards this goal from a multi-disciplinary perspective? While molecular and cellular neurobiologists determine the machinery that is responsible for creating neural circuits, systems and network biologists shed light onto how the coordinated actions of neurons lead to cognition and behaviour.

This specialisation crosses the boundaries of multiple sub-fields of biology, life sciences, medicine and behavioural sciences. We develop novel biological and chemical methodologies to control molecules, cells, networks and behaviour, thereby establish a causal link between the different biological scales of brain organization and function. The major topics in this specialisation are:

  • Neural circuit organisation, development and plasticity
  • Neural network function and behaviour
  • Translational models of human brain diseases

Why study Neurobiology at Radboud University?

  • Radboud University is the only university in the Netherlands that covers the complete research field of Neuroscience, from cognition to behaviour, and from subcellular processes, to single-cell analysis, big data, computational modelling, behavioural sciences and advanced machine learning.
  • You will perform your internships in one of Europe’s largest Neuroscience Institutes, the world-renowned Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (DI), and one of the leading research-oriented teaching hospitals in the Netherlands, the Radboud University Medical Centre.
  • The program is tailored to your needs and is flexible. You can choose to perform your internships in other prestigious institutions elsewhere in the world or perform double major with various high-profile Master’s programs at Radboud.

Career prospects

With a multidisciplinary and forward-looking education at the cutting-edge of modern neurobiology, graduates of the Neurobiology programme have a wide range of options, including in:

  • fundamental and translational (disease-oriented) research in various fields of Neuroscience, working in universities, research institutes and teaching hospitals
  • research and development (R&D) in pharmaceutical companies and biomedical industry (including neurotechnology-focused companies)
  • science management, policy, advisement and communication positions in (inter-)governmental, private, academic, and health sectors

Innovative research projects often result in unique knowledge and products that might have commercial utility. Several of our graduates chose the entrepreneurial path, bringing their knowledge into the market.

PhD positions

If you would like to have a career in science, it is possible to apply for a PhD position at Radboud University. Of course, you can also apply at any other university worldwide. Many of our students have already attained a PhD position.

Our approach to this field

At Radboud University, all branches of Neurobiology are accounted for, and strongly intertwined through the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (DI). This unique combination of expertises is a real advantage for Neurobiology students: it gives you absolute freedom to develop your knowledge in your field of interest and a high profile network for your future career.

The specialisation programme depends on the Master’s programme that you will follow. In this way, it will perfectly fit to your current knowledge and practical skills. However, as all neurobiology research topics are interdisciplinary, you will become acquainted with other disciplines as well. This will help you to develop a common ground that is necessary to communicate in a multi-faceted (research) team
