Gain the technical qualification of an advanced mechanical engineer... with the managerial skills necessary to advance your career in the field.

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen's University Belfast offers advanced degrees in Mechanical Engineering of the highest standards taught by enthusiastic staff with reputations in research, teaching and innovation and who will inspire you to become the best you can be once you graduate and become a professional.

This programme is for students from a broad range of STEM-related degrees who want to develop the relevant skills to practice mechanical engineering in an industrial setting, as well as practicing engineers who are looking to improve their professional and management skills and also refresh their skills and knowledge in technical engineering subjects.

The course benefits from a strong dual-emphasis on technical content and professional skills along with a focus on student development through practice and project work rather than desk-work alone. Content is delivered by both academic experts and industry consultants / practitioners, and real-world examples of engineering problems are dissected through taught modules and regular industry-based projects.

  • Improve graduate employability by developing the postgraduate skills required for a successful transition to industry
  • Develop and enhance the skills of professional engineers already practising in industry
  • Equip graduates with transferrable skill sets in numeracy, ICT, team working and effective communication, which are required for management and leadership roles in industry or academia
  • Develop in-depth technical knowledge in specific subjects and advanced computational modelling for candidates considering academic research or technical specialism in industry.

Mechanical Engineers fulfil important roles in many industries including power, transport, aerospace, manufacturing, marine, and medical devices. Demand for Masters level Mechanical Engineering graduates continues to grow globally.

Queen's University is offering an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering comprising modules from its internationally recognised and accredited MEng course.

A broad range of modules is available with a strong foundation in physical science and numerical analysis. Topics include advanced materials, structures and dynamics, power and energy, design and managment.

Modules have an emphasis on industrial application and are delivered by internationally recognised academic staff with strong industrial research links.

Formal lectures are presented, but students will also acquire knowledge and understanding experientially through assignments as well as individual and group project work.

Assessment is based on written examinations, coursework and oral presentations by both individuals and groups.

The School provides a supportive learning environment with an emphasis on IT provision and the use of advanced engineering simulation and modelling software platforms that are industrially relevant.

The programme includes a significant piece of independent project work. For full-time candidates this is typically associated with technologically leading research activities within the School. For part-time candidates, the project is normally undertaken in conjunction with the candidate's employer and academic supervision.

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has an international reputation for research quality, and was one of the top Mechanical Engineering Schools in the last UK REF assessment of higher education. Students benefit from teaching that is informed by leading-edge research and supported by first-class facilities.

Prospects for Mechanical Engineers with Master level qualifications are excellent with very high graduate employment rates and graduate salary levels above the UK average.
