Energy and its sustainability will always be a key global issue for modern contemporary societies. In order to really stand out, young professionals in the Energy sector need education that is interdisciplinary: technical as well as economics/management/law related. The International Hellenic University offers just such a diverse MSc in Energy Systems programme that is open to candidates from different academic disciplines and which has been in high demand since its first intake of students in 2010. Leading academics from the USA (Purdue), Germany (TU Aachen, TU Muenchen), Israel (Ben Gurion), the UK (Cass Business School) and Greece, together with instructors from public authorities and key players from energy-related organizations, have taught in this programme in the past years. The programme offers interdisciplinary knowledge on a variety of areas, and students can tailor the programme to their needs by choosing focuses on the following one of two Streams: Energy Management (financial, managerial, legal aspects of modern energy systems and an overview of current fossil and renewable energy technologies), and Renewable Energy (state of the art renewable energy technology with an overview of managerial/financial aspects of energy systems).
This programme is designed for University graduates of Engineering, Geotechnical and Natural Sciences departments who wish to gain further expertise in the engineering aspects of the Energy sector.
The MSc in Energy Systems (full-time) is a 14-month programme taught over three terms. Lectures mainly take place on weekday evenings. The MSc in Energy Systems programme is also available in part-time mode over 26 months for those who cannot commit to a full-time programme either for work or other reasons.
Upon arrival at IHU, students follow two intensive foundation courses titled "Applied Statistics and Forecasting" and "Energy Conversion Technologies" that aim to bring all incoming students to the same level with respect to some of the knowledge that is required to excel in the programme. During the first term, all students are required to follow four mandatory core courses. During the second term, students tailor their programme further by choosing a stream from two demanding areas of interest. Students choose one of two streams: a) Energy Systems Management (ESM) or b) Renewable Energy (RE). Depending on their choice, students then follow three stream required courses and two elective courses. Finally, in the third semester, work is dedicated exclusively to the Master's dissertation. The Master's dissertation provides a good opportunity to apply theory and concepts learned during the year to a real-world Energy Systems problem or challenge.
The First Term
During the first term, all MSc in Energy Systems students follow four (4) core courses. These courses offer a thorough grounding in key functional areas of the Energy sector by providing the required technical, legal and managerial education for all incoming students. These core courses sum up to a total of 30 ECTS units.
The Second Term
During the second term, students follow the stream that they have chosen during application. Stream required and elective courses help students specialize further in their chosen stream. All students attend the respective Stream Required Courses, which sum up to 18 ECTS. In addition, during the second term students tailor their programme further by choosing elective courses. The choice of elective courses must sum up to 12 ECTS.

During the third semester, students work on their Master’s Dissertation project, the thematic area of which is relevant to their programme of studies and their interests. The dissertation provides a good opportunity to apply theory and concepts learned in different courses to a real-world energy-related problem or challenge. Students are supervised throughout their projects by a member of the academic faculty and the academic assistants. After submission of the dissertation, students present their projects to classmates and faculty at a special event.
In collaboration with our academic associates and their supervisors, a number of students in the past have managed to succeed in publishing their dissertation projects in peer-reviewed journals or presenting them at international conferences.
The following indicative employment opportunities are available to our graduates after the completion of the MSc in Energy Systems:
- Senior technical positions in renewable energy engineering - Managerial positions in the booming Renewable Energy sector (Hydro, Tidal Wave and Bio-Energy, Wind, Solar and Geothermal) as well as Utilities management - Government policy making - Management of Smart Grid technology networks
In addition to technical skills gained through study, our students benefit from the University's excellent Careers Office. Students thus graduate fully prepared to take on the job market.
Students of the MSc in Energy Systems make extensive use of our recently set up Energy Lab. Facilities include a brand new computer-controlled Photovoltaic system, a Solar Thermal system, an IR camera and environmental meters that students use during their studies and dissertation research.
The IHU operates on a rolling admissions basis, in two (2) rounds of applications.

This means that candidates apply for and are admitted to our programmes all year round, until the end of the 1st round (June 15th). Round 2 applications will be considered according to the availability of places in the programme after Round 1.
