"For many years I wanted to complete my Psychology training, which I started during the 1990's. Life and immigration presented me with many challenges and indeed several other opportunities that led me in a different direction (i.e. healthcare and education). Nevertheless, my passion remained and so I sought out a course that would help me achieve my goal.
When I explored all the other course providers in my chosen field and spoke with people at these various institutions, it was Derby that stood out. The help I received from UDOL was clear, detailed and provided me with the confidence to make my decision. I could see which modules I would study; how these would be delivered and assessed; the timescales involved in the study, and the support in place to facilitate my academic progress. I could also see the links between my proposed area of study and my work in healthcare and behaviour change. Financially, Derby was fairly priced and I would be able to obtain a career development loan to help me fund my studies. So with that in mind, I joined UDOL and have not looked back.
The course is set up on Blackboard - an online academic platform - which is intuitive and easy to use. The induction module was a great way to engage with the platform and helped me navigate around the various features and areas within the virtual learning environment. Each module had its own pages and resources with an accompanying forum for discussions. This helped make online learning alive and accessible as the classroom was a "click" away. The forum discussions really helped me to develop my understanding of material and the "live" sessions were a wonderful opportunity to engage with everyone in real time. The course structure; materials and academic staff were outstanding and I could not have achieved what I have, without them. I am truly grateful.
Staff were always helpful and incredibly supportive. I loved the whole experience."
I searched on the British Psychological Society (BPS) website for accredited online courses, and I found the University of Derby Online Learning. I first completed the University Certificate in Psychology then the Masters in Psychology in order to enrol in the MSc Health Psychology, and finish stage one with the Society. I exited at the Postgraduate Diploma level, and started the Health Psychology Masters. Of course, I loved the University and many of the staff from the beginning. They were very friendly, encouraging, and mostly supportive.
I was attracted to online learning because I am based in Qatar, I did not have an option of studying on campus, so I searched for online courses and came across the University of Derby Online Learning.
Whilst studying you experienced challenges in your life. How did the University support you during this time?
When my Dad fell gravely ill, I emailed one module tutor and informed her of the situation and that I may not be able to continue with my studies. She was simply amazing. She supported me and suggested that I take a break rather than quitting and told me to contact her whenever I needed to. At this point I realised that I couldn’t stop at every challenge and quit so I decided to continue. I did and was awarded an A in this module.
How would you describe your online learning experience at Derby? What did you find particularly beneficial?
It was an amazing enriching experience. Everything was beneficial. Even when times were tough and I thought of quitting I received so much support from my tutors. I also received a lot of support from family and friends, of which I am very grateful for. Without this continuous support I would not have achieved my qualification.
What was your most memorable moment during your time at Derby?
When I was nominated for the Vice Chancellor Graduation Prize. All my hard work paid off in the end and my Dad got to see me achieve this which meant the world to him. The main thing I taught myself was to never give up and that strength comes first from within, if I could achieve this with everything that was happening in my life, anyone can.
What would you say to anyone considering an online course at Derby?
Definitely go for it! You will never regret making this choice.
