Core modules cover the fundamental and advanced concepts of modelling, simulation, control, optimisation and systems engineering. You'll also learn a range of management techniques, including: project management, risk management, professional skills and effective management of innovative development.
There are lectures, tutorials, laboratory work and individual assignments.

"I have always had a passion for engineering and have been quite a space enthusiast since my childhood, having been part of a number of clubs at VIT University in India - but none of these came close to rocketry. I chose to come to The University of Sheffield because it is one of the top universities in the UK that offers an MSc course in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering. Not only this but Sheffield is the only university that has a department dedicated to the discipline and is rated the best university for student experience".
Alongside her studies Anikta is also part of Team SunrIde and is the Project Lead. Team SunrIde is inspired from the success of SunbYte, the University of Sheffield’s balloon telescope project. The university doesn’t have its own specialised rocket engineering group, so we decided to form our own. Striving to become a ground-breaking rocket engineering team within the University and the UK. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering. The Spaceport America Cup (SAC) is the world’s largest intercollegiate competition in rocketry and we are the first team to enter from the UK. This inspired me along with my co-leader Jae Hyun Lim and academic advisor Dr Fedun to set up SunrIde and enter the competition.
My Masters Thesis is entitled “Numerical Analysis of Plasma flow in Solar Atmosphere” and my tutor is Dr Viktor Fedun. The course provides a combination of theoretical and practical aspects that helped when it came to designing the rocket. In particular, we were able to use the universities propulsion laboratory to test the thrust curves of the motor. The design and testing of the rocket also involved several concepts of stability. A stability of 1.5-2.0 was required for the competition, this requirement was met due to concepts and theories taught at the university.
"My goal has always been to be actively involved with research and teaching. I intend to look for a life-long involvement as a researcher in robotics and controls. My advice to budding engineers is fall and make mistakes, as this is the best way to learn and grow."
