This programme is uniquely structured to enable dental practitioners to enhance their knowledge and clinical skills in endodontics. Requiring a minimum commitment of one day a week for three calendar years, inclusive of attendance one day every fortnight, it is ideally suited for the busy dental practitioner keen on acquiring a postgraduate qualification in endodontics whilst continuing to work in practice.

The course will be offered on a part-time basis only, as a three-year MSc.

Core modules

  • Applied science of endodontology (30 credits)
  • Advanced applied science of endodontology (30 credits)
  • Laboratory endodontic skills (30 credits)
  • Clinical skills in endodontics (30 credits)
  • Audit project in endodontic practice (15 credits)
  • Literature review in relation to endodontic practice (45 credits)

Learning and teaching

A variety of teaching and learning methods will be employed, including:

  • Formal seminars given by experts in their field on topics relevant to Endodontics.
  • Pre-clinical laboratory sessions comprising demonstrations, "hands-on" practical exercises, discussions and feedbacks.
  • Clinical practice sessions, treating patients under supervision, review of management and outcome.
  • Self-directed learning including critical review of the scientific literature, scholarship exercises and e-learning.
  • Case presentations involving case management discussions, reflection and review of outcome.
  • Reading lists of books, journals and papers.

A combination of assessment methods will be employed, including:

  • Formative assessment: regular informal verbal feedback regarding performance and achievement of the learning objectives.
  • Assessment of competency: a competency-based Practical Test at the end of the Laboratory Endodontic Skills module. A pass of this ‘Gateway Test’ is required before progressing to the Clinical Skills sessions, treating patients. Failure will necessitate additional laboratory practical sessions before re-taking the ‘Gateway Test’.
  • Summative assessment: assessment of each module by written papers, practical skills tests, essay questions, viva voce, clinical case reports, literature review reports and audit presentations.

All study modules and learning activities must be successfully completed and assessments passed for each academic year to permit progress to the next academic year. Subject to Examining Board approval, re-sit examinations, which may be in the form of academically appropriate alternative assessments, will be held, if necessary. There is also an overall progression threshold mark, based on the average mark for both first and second years to permit progress to the third (final) year.
