MSc - Distributed and Mobile Computing

Course Description

The MSc in Distributed and Mobile Computing is a taught masters programme (NFQ Level 9) which provides an opportunity for IT professionals to enhance and update their knowledge of the latest technologies and research activities within the important fields of distributed and mobile computing. This masters programme takes as its main themes the design and development of large scale distributed and mobile computer systems, the design of a network infrastructure to support them, and how scalable systems can be designed that exploit distributed hardware architectures.

Students taking the programme are allowed to choose eight modules from an offering of ten modules (subject to sufficient demand for non-core modules). The elective choice is designed to allow students to select whether they wish a technical focus or a management/business focus to go with their mobile/distributed core.

The programme comprises two taught semesters of modules followed by a dissertation - a mini-thesis on a research area that the student has investigated and completed a practical piece of work for the purpose of the investigation. The programme can be completed parttime in two calendar years. Students typically attend the Institute two nights per week taking an average of two modules per semester. In the second year students also complete a dissertation.
