Why choose this course?
This course aims to give you a deep knowledge and understanding of civil engineering to develop your career within the construction profession. You will develop your capabilities for investigation, analysis and design in the context of a dynamic global environment where complexity of factors such as sustainability and environmental impact have a significant impact on engineering processes. In addition, over 50% of the course is concerned with deepening your abilities in technical and project management subjects.
You will demonstrate self-direction and originality in dealing with complex open-ended non-conventional problems and undertake critical analysis to provide substantive conclusions in the Civil Engineering field in a manner associated with that of being a professional engineer.

The course is designed and delivered by professionals who have extensive research and industrial experience and is designed to meet professional body requirements. It is intended that the course will be accredited by the joint board of moderators consisting of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, The Institution of Highways and Transportation and Institute of Highway Engineers.
The University has established various links with industry and many of the dissertation projects have industrial involvement.
The teaching staff who will be delivering the course have proven research expertise in sustainable construction materials, sustainable transport, integrated transport systems, environmental management, structural performance and urban pollution.

Graduates from the course will have employment opportunities under a variety of civil engineering related disciplines. These opportunities will arise from consultancies, government agencies, local government, contractors, financial institutions, developers.
International graduates will have employment opportunities in similar governmental authorities and civil engineering companies within their respective countries. They will also have the opportunities to work on Donor community funded project in their respective countries.
Graduates from the MSc programme will have the opportunity to further their studies to higher degrees (e.g. PhD). Graduates from the PGCert can progress to the MSc programme if they achieve a satisfactory performance (e.g. C grade).
What skills will I gain?
At the end of this course you, you will be able to:
- display mastery of complex and specialised areas of knowledge and skills and demonstrate expertise in highly specialised advanced engineering technical, managerial, professional and research skills and the ability to apply them to analyse and/or solve key engineering processes
- use advanced techniques of new and emerging technologies to construct models and employ them in the evaluation, management and solution of engineering problems
- evaluate engineering processes with respect to complex advanced principles and apply quantitative methods and computer software relevant to their engineering discipline in order to solve engineering problems
- conduct research or advanced technical or professional activity; design and apply appropriate research methodologies and communicate results of research to peers; and accept accountability in related decision making including use of supervision
- identify, classify and describe the performance of systems and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques
- apply and integrate knowledge, skills and understanding of other engineering disciplines to support study in civil engineering disciplines
Who accredits this course?
The MSc Civil Engineering is accredited for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (non-technical). This means that the programme meets the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) under the provisions of UK-SPEC for intakes 2012-2016 for candidates that have already acquired a CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

For direct entry onto the Master’s programme:A minimum of 2:2 honours degree in a Civil Engineering discipline, or equivalent is normally required. Graduates from other engineering disciplines can also apply, however they would have to go through an interview process prior to securing admission to the course.Applicants with substantial professional experience in related fields with a qualification equivalent to at least Higher National Certificate/Diploma will also be considered. These candidates will need to produce evidence of the professional experience (ie. references, portfolio of projects, etc.), and will have to attend an interview.
