Course overview

Our course will advance your analytical skills and enhance your practical experience in the core subject areas of civil engineering.It covers lab work; analysis and design of structures, geotechnics, hydraulics and transportation; and construction management. Successful completion of the MSc Civil Engineering course will satisfy the academic requirements for chartered status.

You will also gain an insight into the broader issues of project and process management within the civil engineering field. Application of modern IT techniques to complex problem-solving is a theme that runs through the course.

Career options

As a qualified civil engineer with advanced training, you will be in demand in the construction industry worldwide, with employers including consulting engineering companies, contractors, local/ national government and utility companies. Alternatively, you can use this course as the basis for further education, or a research position, progressing to study for PhD in Civil Engineering and other technical PhDs in Engineering and the built environment.

Internship Option

The MSc Civil Engineering with Industrial Placement option is available to full-time students who attain an average module score of 60% or better. The internship element is designed to give you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and enhance your employability, as well as your personal and professional development. Your dissertation will be based on a 26-week period of engagement with an employer.
