Course content

MSc Business Analytics prepares graduates to understand the context, importance and relevance of big data problems facing a business and solve them using a variety of statistical, operational research and machine learning techniques. The overriding objective of the programme is to train students to solve business problems and obtain actionable business insight using analytics.

Combining academic rigour and practical relevance, the programme is a careful balance of teaching and learning, individual and group work. Case study methodology and class-based discussions will be used to strengthen the conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills of the participants in real situations. In addition, there will be regular seminars by external expert speakers.

The Programme

Before starting the programme, you will need to undertake a range of online pre-study modules, which include:
• Maths for Business Analytics
• Introduction to Finance
• Accounting Primer
• Career and Professional Development
• Study Skills

In the autumn term you will study compulsory modules which include:
• Maths and Statistics Foundations for Analytics
• Data Structures and Algorithms
• Network Analytics
• Analytics in Business
• Optimisation and Decision Models
• Fundamentals of Database Technologies
• Statistics and Econometrics
• Machine Learning
• Visualisation

Core modules are the backbone of our programme and will provide you with a solid knowledge base in every subject area. You will be taught through a range of contexts – lectures, syndicate discussions, group exercises and individual case studies – and assessed through a combination of examinations, group presentations and coursework.

In the spring and summer terms you will also be given the opportunity to choose from a variety of electives, and will undertake a consulting project or a work placement.

Each elective builds on previous experience while introducing new and exciting disciplines. Electives include:
• Digital Marketing Analytics
• Big Data in Finance
• Advanced Machine Learning
• Data Management and Ethics
• Healthcare and Medical Analytics
• Logistics and Supply-Chain Analytics
• Retail and Marketing Analytics
• Workforce Analytics

The programme will culminate in a Business Analytics Report which will enable you to consolidate and apply the knowledge that you will have gained throughout the year.
