Where will I study?

Student Profile

Zeeshan Sheikh

Degree: MSc in Dental Materials
Job title: Assistant Professor
Employer: Department of Dental Materials, Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine
Why Materials?
I studied Dental Materials as part of my undergraduate degree in Dental Surgery at the Baqai Medical and Dental University in Karachi, Pakistan. I enjoyed it immensely and this prompted me to pursue a postgraduate degree in the subject.

Why QMUL?
QMUL has the oldest Materials Department in the UK and is well regarded internationally.

What was your research based on?
My MSc research was “Polymeric Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) Membranes for Periodontal Applications”. I worked in Ihtesham Rehman’s Dental Materials Group and synthesized novel Polyurethane membranes and carried out spectroscopic analyses for protein adsorption studies in relation to periodontal GTR.

What was the best part of being a student here?
The Materials Department is the friendliest and most supportive department at QMUL. The academic staff were of the highest international standard. The courses offered were not just the ones directly related to Dental Materials but the more generic ones such as ‘Materials Selection in Design’ were extremely thought provoking and enjoyable. QMUL lecturers have a knack of making the process of teaching and learning fun.

What do you do now, having graduated?
Shortly after completing my MSc I was offered a job as an Assistant Professor. Recently I was appointed the head of the Department of Dental Materials and Preclinical Dentistry at AIDM (Karachi, Pakistan) which is affiliated with the Karolinska Institute of Dentistry in Sweden.

What was the worst part of the course?
The worst part of the course was when it ended. I still cherish my memories and all the friendships I made at QMUL. It was the best year of my life.

How did your degree help you?
As I was already a practicing dental surgeon with fellowship training in endodontics and periodontics, I did not lack clinical experience. I did however lack research experience and this MSc gave me the opportunity to learn some critical research skills which are helping me greatly in my professional life.

What was the best part of the course?
My MSc project on Periodontal GTR membranes was the best part of the course. The experience of working with in the dental materials research group with Ihtesham and his PhD students on this project was invaluable.
