MS Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE)

Course Description

Graduate study in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at Illinois provides the fundamental knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience necessary to enter a successful career involving advanced materials.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers graduate work leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering. The student body of about 200 students and the faculty have varied backgrounds in science and engineering. Faculty members carry out research in many different areas, and students may choose to specialize in various aspects of materials science and engineering, including ceramics, metals, polymers, electronic materials, biomaterials and composites. The MatSE Department emphasizes interdisciplinary research, and collaboration across engineering departments is common.

Course Objectives

-To review physics and chemistry in the context of materials science & engineering.
-To describe the different types of bonding in solids, and the physical ramifications of these differences.
-To describe and demonstrate diffraction, including interpretation of basic x-ray data.
-Give an introduction to metals, ceramics, polymers, and electronic materials in the context of a
molecular level understanding of bonding.
-Give an introduction to the relation between processing, structure, and physical properties.
-Give the beginning student an appreciation of recent developments in materials science & engineering
within the framework of this class.
-Give the beginning student an opportunity for teamwork in research
-Give the beginning student practice in basic expository technical writing.
