MRes Materials and Surface Design

Course Description

The Master of Research (MRes) in Materials and Surface Design is a new practice-based design programme that encourages innovation, lateral approaches and the creative exploration of materials within the design discipline. Students will examine how existing materials and technologies can be exploited, adapted and applied to new design contexts, considering potential business development from their ideas. This exploration is supported by a thorough grounding in research methods, enabling students to make the links between prior work in the field, new developments, and their own experimental design research work.
Course aims

The programme aims to encourage students to develop new aesthetic qualities from existing materials and processes, and consider wider issues such as sustainability. Students will explore materials performance qualities to generate new products and design solutions for different markets, developing their design practice and considering commercial applications for their design work. The practical design elements are a key component of the programme and enable students to make use of the wide range of technology and expertise available in the School of Materials.

The programme offers core taught units in research methods, materials aesthetics and business creation and development, and option units with a technology or business focus, concluding with a substantial design-led individual research project and written thesis.

Taught units are delivered in semester 1 (September to January) and in semester 2 (February to June), with the individual research project and thesis developed in the second semester and submitted in September.
