Course content

This Masters by Research provides you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and research skills that are essential foundations for further research and an academic career. The programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach, teaching both practical and theoretical aspects of research. The focus is on acquiring the knowledge and skills to design, conduct, evaluate and disseminate your own individual research project. You will also acquire a range of transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers, including the capacity for critical thought, project management, time management, presentation skills, and the ability to disseminate original research.

The programme has been designed to suit candidates from a range of backgrounds and disciplines. It is particularly suitable if you are aspiring to work in a research-based career, focus on a single topic of interest, or gain ideal preparation for undertaking a PhD.

What will I study?

You will produce a research dissertation. A research training and development programme will help you towards this goal:

  • Twelve compulsory research training sessions will cover aspects of research design, values in research, and research practicalities;
  • You will also be required to attend at least six further methodological training sessions relevant to science, social science, and arts and humanities.

How will I study?

Research degrees are centred on independent study, allowing you a great deal of control over the pace and direction of your individual research project, with the expert guidance and support of your supervisor(s).

Research training takes place every Wednesday from October to December, and will equip you with the skills you will need: first to complete your MRes, and later for potential PhD study or a research career.

How will I be assessed?

The first element of the MRes will be assessed through the production of a research proposal, a project management plan and a skills development portfolio.

The final assessment of your individual research project will be through a dissertation, or appropriate alternative, as well as a viva voce examination.

Who will be teaching me?

Being a research degree, you will not be taught but your research project will be supervised by a team comprising experts from across the university who have international research profiles in their discipline.

The completion of your individual research project will be supported by regular supervision meetings with an expert in your chosen field of study.

What are my career prospects?

The skills and experience acquired through an MRes will provide ideal preparation for progressing to higher research qualifications, such as MPhil and PhD, or pursuing a research-based career.
