MRes Marine Geology and Geophysics

Course Description

This programme provides broad knowledge of marine geological and geophysical techniques and advanced training in marine geophysical exploration techniques, mathematical modelling, geodynamics, coastal processes, micropalaeontology or palaeoceanographic expertise.

You will gain hands-on research experience through an advanced project with leading international researchers. The MRes focuses less on taught modules and more on the research project (about two-thirds of the year).

Semester one:

Core modules: Contemporary Topics in Ocean and Earth Science; Introduction to Marine Geology; plus one from Introduction to Chemical Oceanography or Introduction to Physical Oceanography

Optional modules: Applied and Marine Geophysics; Basin Analysis; Coastal Sediment Dynamics; Computational Data Analysis for Geophysicists and Ocean Scientists; Geodynamics and Solid Earth Geophysics; Microfossils, Environments and Time

Semester two:

Optional modules: Applied Coastal Sediment Dynamics; Ecological Modelling; Global Climate Cycles;
High-resolution Marine Geophysics

Plus research project

(Student Profile)

Francesca Pascolietti

I decided to study at the University – and the National Oceanographic Centre Southampton - because of its worldwide excellent reputation in marine science research. As student of the MRes in Marine Geology and Geophysics, I had a great opportunity to be part of a very high quality academic program and to work with leading professionals in the field of marine and submarine geology. I worked on the physical characterisation of marine sediments coming from the deep water levees of Nazare’ and Setubal submarine canyons of the western Portugal margin. For this purpose I could employ advanced state-of-the-art equipment for non-destructive core analysis from the Boscorf Lab, being trained and always accompanied in the work by highly qualified staff.

Southampton is a very nice and safe town. Living in a studio flat of the Highfield Halls, I was very close to the central campus of the University of Southampton, and I had easily at my disposal all the University’s facilities, including internet, any kind of sport classes, libraries, day and night buses, reception and medical help when necessary. Moreover, cinemas, theatres and wide and groomed green areas make Southampton a very pleasant place to live.

I’m now involved in a PhD program in Earth Sciences of the University of Siena, in Italy. Thanks to the year spent in Southampton I had the opportunity to meet very interesting and leading scientists with whom I hope to continue a working collaboration in future.

As an international student, I could take advantage of several services of the University of Southampton dedicated to foreign students, and I have to thank all those people of the University, who with their kindness and expertise, supported me in every step of my life and studies in Southampton. Thanks to their help and advice I could have a very productive, stress-free and safe year in a foreign country.

Entry Requirements

You will need a good 2:1 (or equivalent) honours degree in chemical, biological, physical, Earth and environmental sciences, engineering, oceanography or mathematics. A solid background in mathematics at undergraduate level and familiarity with computers is required. If you do not have these qualifications, but have relevant professional experience in coastal sciences, we will consider you. 210 ECTS
