I work for the Environment Agency in West Cornwall as an Environment Officer, a post I started 5 years ago soon after graduating. I regulate the waste and water industry, carrying out fisheries enforcement and investigating environmental crime.
I studied an MSc in Applied Marine Science at Plymouth and was drawn there for many reasons, including the practical ang highly interesting programme content (marine pollution, marine and estuarine chemistry). The location of the city really added to its appeal.
Working in West Cornwall, which has a huge mining heritage and consequently a big impact on the environment, means that the processes I studied and analysed in the marine chemistry module have had direct applicability.
Without a doubt I got the job because of the skills and expertise I gained at Plymouth. My role is practical, technical and scientific. It is diverse and at times pressured so the range of topics covered and the challenges I faced while at the university have all helped a great deal.
