Overview

Most people probably think that research in accounting and finance is "all about numbers", but that really couldn't be further from the truth! Indeed, there is much more to accounting and finance research. This course allows students the opportunity to study the advanced aspects of accounting or finance with staff that have a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of their subjects.

This course is specifically designed to prepare you for further study such as a PhD. Under the supervision of our highly-rated Accountancy team you’ll have a wide choice of modules allowing you to specialise in your chosen area of focus.

You’ll gain the skills you need for your doctorate by studying extended versions of Research Methods & Methodology and Quantitative/Econometric Methods. Uniquely this course offers you the opportunity to undertake a Directed Reading module so you’ll pursue a programme of study specially designed for you by your PhD supervisory team.

Teaching & Assessment

This course involves seven months of taught modules including Research Methods, Quantitative Methods and three module options. 

The options will depend on the proposed area of research you wish to pursue and will be primarily literature based. 

Once these modules are successfully completed, you can leave with a Postgraduate Diploma, or write a dissertation if continuing to the MRes.

How you will be taught

Modules are delivered using a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and hands-on computer labs.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed by a combination coursework, examinations and dissertation.

What you will study

This course will give you the skills to appreciate accounting and finance in a global context. You will:

  • Critically evaluate research in accounting and finance
  • Appreciate the links between different aspects of accounting and finance, e.g. financial accounting and reporting, financial management, management accounting and corporate governance
  • Understand key social science research methods
  • Apply a range of research methods to examine a specialist area of accounting and finance
  • Communicate complex and specialised issues clearly and concisely
  • Work intensively on a research-based dissertation
  • Prepare for doctoral study and a career in academia

Modules

This course comprises four core modules:

  • Research Methods & Methodology (BU52001)
  • Quantitative Methods (BU52002)*
  • Directed Reading (BU52003)
  • Dissertation (BU52010)

*Econometrics for Finance (BU52017) may, with the approval of the Programme Director, be substituted for this module

Careers

This specialised course is designed for students intending to pursue further study (e.g. PhD). Recent graduates are undertaking doctoral studies in the UK and elsewhere with graduates employed in universities all over the world. A small number are pursuing other types of work for organisations in the UK and overseas.
