Course content

Most people probably think that research in accounting and finance is "all about numbers", but that really couldn't be further from the truth! Indeed, there is much more to accounting and finance research. This course allows students the opportunity to study the advanced aspects of accounting or finance with staff that have a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of their subjects.

Why study MRes Accounting and Finance at Dundee?

We would be delighted to hear from potential new collaborators in research. All of our academic staff engage in high-quality research that is disseminated through various channels, and which has a significant influence on what, and how, we then teach our students

Several of our staff have written critically about the role of accounting and finance practices from the perspective of ethics and global sustainability. Others have explored how accounting is intertwined with political and cultural tensions as organisations attempt to implement new business structures and practices. Others have explored which elements of Western markets might (not) be suitable for adoption and promotion in developing and emerging economies.

What's great about MRes Accounting and Finance at Dundee?

Our priority is to sustain long-term research excellence, and ensure that our research today continues to influence the practices of tomorrow. Dundee is often referred to as the "City of Discovery", after Scott's ship that was built in and is now permanently berthed here. The "discovery" spirit is one that runs through our School, and new collaborating partnerships will augment our drive for future accounting and finance-related discoveries.

The list of past, future and potential research interests amongst our staff is long, and we continually endeavour to pass on our new findings via internationally-rated publications, and through what we teach our students.

How you will be taught

Our programmes are delivered using a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and hands-on computer labs. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework (for example, an essay), computer labs, projects based on group assignments and exams.

What you will study

This programme involves seven months of taught modules including Research Methods, Quantitative Methods and three module options.

The options will depend on the proposed area of research that the student wishes to pursue and will be primarily literature based.

Once these modules are successfully completed, you will write a dissertation if continuing to the MRes, otherwise you can leave with a Postgraduate Diploma.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed by a combination coursework, examinations and dissertation.

Our master's degrees provide an education emphasising analytical, decision-making and communication skills. These skills are needed in organisations of all types and sizes – both in the UK and internationally.

Your career is important to us and the practical relevance of our degrees is kept under careful review. We liaise with employers and the university careers service to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of the graduate employment market.

Our graduates are to be found working all over the world in a variety of interesting and challenging jobs. Many are employed by large multi-national firms or with smaller firms in the UK including manufacturing companies and financial institutions – some as managers in specialist positions and some as accountants; some operate in the public sector, while others are running their own businesses.
