History provides us with a fascinating range of events, cultures and facts about how historical events shape who and where we are now. Aberdeen has over 500 years of teaching and research in history in the UK's 5th oldest university. This programme allows you to choose some direction but also gives you the opportunity to prepare research utilising all academic methods offered to really enjoy and advance your subject area.

The University specialises in many areas of history which include country history and types of history. It was ranked as a leading university in Scotland for History Research Impact (2nd REF) The area feeds into wider research in Irish and Scottish Studies, medieval and Modern Studies and World History and Global Empires. There are special collections of Jacobite materials, The MacBean Collection of Catholic heritage and estate papers from the middle ages. The Sir Duncan Rice Library gives you further access to many collections and periods which you can study at your leisure.

The School offers research centres which you are welcome to attend events in. These include:

The programme gives you intensive research training in Modern History preparing you for doctoral research or careers requiring research and communication.

Academics have published books and contributed chapters to the highly prestigious 'Cambridge History of Ireland, Oxford History of Poland-Lithuania' and others.
