Course content

The Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) PGCert at UCLan has been developed in collaboration with the regional Local Authorities. It provides an intense period of teaching and learning which draws on the expertise of AMHPs, academics, lawyers and service users and carers.

The programme reflects the needs of our local employers and stakeholders and we continually shape this in response to feedback. Agency colleagues and previous learners found UCLan’s AMHP programme to have a “supportive learning environment” in which they feel “keen and motivated to learn”, experiencing a “shift in thinking” towards the AMHP perspective and value base.

This course is specific to qualified and professionally registered mental health practitioners (Social Workers, Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists or Clinical Psychologists) who are usually nominated and funded by their Local Authority to undertake AMHP training. It is also open to any applicants that meet the entry requirements, including practitioners working outside of a Local Authority. Applicants will need to have access to a suitable practice placement with a practice assessor who is a qualified AMHP.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB) and we will guide you through this process. Students who are enrolled with the School of Social Work, Care and Community may be eligible for international travel opportunities relevant to their study.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

The University has been endorsed by the College of Social Work as a provider of CPD training.

This CPD course has been approved by HCPC. Last reviewed September 2015.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Keynote lectures, seminars, tutorials, material for self-directed learning, e-learning, workshops will form part of university based learning provision.

Students will be required to link formal learning to their practice and will be encouraged to build on existing skills/develop new skills to consolidate their learning across the academic and practice fields.

Skills, values and knowledge will be developed through group discussions, group tutorials, presentations and practice learning opportunities.

The overarching teaching and learning strategy will enable students to develop cognitive skills which are appropriate to independent learning and postgraduate study.

A range of assessment methods will include essays, presentations, case studies, practice observation, reflective writing, practice portfolios, and personal development files.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Aims of the course include:
-To provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to meet section 2 of the Approval Criteria for AMHP training (HCPC 2013);
-To enable students to refine the skills and values that are necessary to work as autonomous, competent practitioners and develop critical practice that respects diversity and challenges inequality;
-To provide students with a critical awareness of the evidence base for practice and to apply this in their role as AMHPs;
-To develop critical decision making skills that are consistent with the requirements and duties of an AMHP;
-To provide opportunities for students to critically reflect on practice that is person-centred, ethical and founded on the underpinning values and principles of the AMHP role.
