Course content

The PGCert Mental Health programme has been developed to provide registered mental health professionals an opportunity to enable the individual to further develop their critical thinking, problem solving and the use and of evidence based practice. The programme will in turn develop transferable skills to enhance the practise and career trajectory of the professional. The programme stands alone although may provide a basis for the professional to undertake a further year study to produce a dissertation.

Course Content

Core modules

  • Collaborative Working in Mental Health                   
  • Managing Risk in Health Contexts

Optional modules (Choose 1 of the following):

  • Leadership in Context
  • Work-based Learning
  • Navigating Mental Health and Social Care       

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

A range of teaching methods such as lecture, seminar, problem based and e-learning as well as workshops combined with individual tutorial and support will enable the student to achieve success in this programme. Assessment will be through formative and summative strategies closely aligned to the student’s area of practice.

Careers and Employability

This course is especially suited for: mental health nurses though may be relevlant to other professionals working across this area. The course aims to ensure that successful students are able to work in contemporary service settings and contribute to service development and an increase in quality and consumer satisfaction.

Research / Links with Industry

The course team involved with this Mental Healthcare PGCert have research links with local health board and other healthcare stakeholders, which are fully utilised in ensuring that the modules are relevant to the modern work and research environment the successful students will work in.
