About the course

Entry Requirements

A 2:1 (Hons) bachelor degree in electronic/electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, automation, control engineering, computing or a related subject. Applicants should have high marks in relevant modules such as mechatronics, robotics, automation, control systems.

Rodrigo Daniel Solis Ortega

Rodrigo graduated with a masters degree in Mechatronics and Robotics in 2015 before returning to Leeds in 2016 to pursue his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds, and is also currently working as a Teaching Assistant in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

When deciding on where to study for his masters degree, Rodrigo found that the University of Leeds was one of the few universities that offered a course on Mechatronics. As he wasn’t fond of big cities, Rodrigo found Leeds and the University of Leeds to be the perfect match for him.

For his masters research project, titled "Software tool for electric power estimation of robotic exoskeletons", Rodrigo work on developing a software tool to estimate the power requirements of a robotic exoskeleton. He said, “the tool was aimed to facilitate the design process behing robotic exoskeletons, specifically the selection of the actuator technology.”

After graduating in 2015 with a masters degree, Rodrigo returned to Leeds to pursue his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering a year later. He said “The high teaching standards of the University of Leeds gave me the confidence to pursue a PhD degree here. After living here for a year during my masters degree, I also fell in love with the University and its’ huge international community, which is also very evident in the city itself.”

“I have been in Leeds for almost six years now, and it has been such an amazing experience. The city has something for everyone. The international community and support offered by the University is excellent as well. Now that I have finished my PhD studies, I am looking for a position as a machine learning or data science engineer, or as an embedded system enginner.”

I did my undergraduate under the same course at Leeds University, having said that, the leading research, amazing facility, and outstanding academic staff is what persuaded me to further my studies here. When I came across mechatronics and robotics prior to my first degree in Leeds, I was intrigued by the course outline and became more engrossed with knowing what the field can provide me. True to the definition of Mechatronics, the engineering at Leeds has shown to be able to deliver the multidisciplinary field. As one of the leading research universities in the UK, the course also integrates other fields of engineering into their modules. By doing so, students can forge new pathways in the ever growing industry and research.

The best aspect of the course would be the knowledge, opportunities and experiences gained from being part of the mechanical and electrical and electronics department. As the course is a joint program between two departments, the best of both departments were experience to the fullest. Both schools were able to offer outstanding staff and hi-tech facilities such as laboratories and teaching spaces in order to develop us.

Leeds is ever growing and is a great city for students. It certainly has something to offer for all. Whether it is a night out in town, a walk about the parks, or even getting a meal with some friends, Leeds has such to offer. In my opinion, Leeds is gradually developing and I hope it continues to grow as a great city for everyone to study, work, and live in.

In the future, I hope to work in the field of research and development (R & D) and/or become a forefront engineering consultant. Currently, I aspire to do a PhD to further develop myself and reach a goal that I had set for myself prior to taking my first degree.

What would I say to students coming to do the same course? Take your time to really think and develop yourself. You have to love the work to excel in it. It was and still is a great experience studying here.
