Program Overview

Fields of research include: acoustics; aerodynamics and fluid mechanics; automatic controls; robotics and industrial automation; energy conversion, combustion, thermodynamics and heat transfer; vibrations and space dynamics; solid mechanics; bioengineering and biomechanics; design and manufacturing processes; industrial engineering, fuel cells, micro-electromechanical systems, mechatronics, and CAD; and naval architecture. Applicants for graduate degrees may be considered for appointment as research assistants, teaching assistants, or markers in the Department. Courses are selected in consultation with faculty.

Program Requirements

The Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) is a graduate-level study program that includes a research investigation and the writing of a thesis. Requirements for the M.A.Sc. include satisfactory completion of 30 credits of graduate-level courses (up to 6 credits may be at the undergraduate level in courses numbered 300 to 499), original research under the supervision of a faculty member, and a thesis. The thesis is assigned 6 to 12 credits and is counted as part of the coursework requirement. A typical completion time for the M.A.Sc. is 24 months. Subject to satisfactory progress and acceptance by a faculty supervisor, a successful M.A.Sc. graduate may transfer to a course of studies leading to the Ph.D.

We have developed a magnetically-controlled MEMS drug delivery device for the treatment of prostate cancer. Using a minimally invasive procedure, the cylindrically shaped device is implanted in the prostate through a needle and delivers a controlled dose of drugs upon actuation. The on-demand release rate of the drug can be controlled by the magnetic field strength and the number of actuations.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I entered grad school not just to obtain a degree for myself; my motives were far beyond that. I love research and I wanted to contribute to it. I found grad school to be a means of achieving this goal. In grad school, students can learn valuable skills like nowhere else, skills that would eventually benefit one throughout his/her entire life.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?
In short terms: a highly reputable university, very interesting research field and a fantastic city to live in.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?
To learn, live and work overseas is a priceless experience and I strongly encourage prospective students to take a chance and move abroad (even for a short period) to get a taste of what it's like. You will learn and experience a lot in the process. Without a doubt, UBC is a great place to start with and few people would regret moving to this beautiful city.
