The ME in Materials Science and Engineering (ME MSE) aims to provide engineers with a specialist education and training in the area of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites for industrial engineering applications from biomedical device manufacture to future energy solutions. It is a two year, 120 credit, professional engineering postgraduate degree programme.

Who is the ME Materials Science and Engineering for?
The ME (Materials Science and Engineering) is designed as a “Second Cycle” (level 9) degree programme for graduates who have already completed a “First Cycle” honours (level 8) engineering degree of at least 3 years duration. It is aimed at those who require a recognised professional qualification in Materials Science and Engineering.
Graduates with an honours degree in a mathematically-based science subject area (such as materials science, polymer science, chemistry or physics) may be eligible to take a tailored 2-year version of the programme, thereby enabling them to become professionally qualified engineers.

What will I learn?
You will gain advanced theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge in the application of Materials Science and Engineering. Emphasis is placed on the skills required to generate new knowledge through research. This is achieved through independent and project based learning while working with UCD academics and researchers on contemporary research projects. The core of the curriculum will be based on the fundamental science of the materials that enable our technological world including:
*Metals
*Ceramics
*Polymers
*Composites
*Semiconductor materials

In each case, the underlying science, processing and properties will be examined and advanced applications of materials will be explored in areas including (but not limited to):
*Biomedical engineering (biomaterials)
*Nanoscience (nano materials)
*Renewable energy solutions (energy materials)

How will I benefit?
Materials Scientists and Engineers are at the centre of virtually every area of technology from optoelectronics to space materials and from automotive and aeromotive manufacturing to biomedical devices. Graduates from this programme will be fully qualified professional engineers, capable of working anywhere in the world at an advanced technical level or as a professional engineering manager.
Graduates will also have specialist training in underlying scientific fundamentals and practical materials handling and analysis techniques that will make them attractive to either potential employers or equip them for further study at advanced postgraduate level such as PhD studies in Ireland or across the world.

What is the programme about?
The aim of the ME Materials Science and Engineering is to provide advanced engineering education in subject areas related to design and application of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers and composites in a range of industries such as biomedical devices, energy engineering, chemical and biochemical plant manufacture, bulk material manufacture etc: it must be borne in mind that every engineering system is made of something and that ‘something’ is a material which must be optimised and engineered for its specific application. In many cases, the available materials are the current limiters to technological development of new, more effective and efficient products.

Programme Highlights
*Focus on the use of materials in engineering systems
*Professional engineering postgraduate degree programme
*Advanced integrated theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge
*Professional work experience
*Technical research project in collaboration with world leading research groups and researchers
*Interdisciplinary curriculum

Where can I go?
Graduates from this programme will be fully qualified as professional engineers, capable of working world-wide at an advanced technical level or as a professional engineering manager.
Most companies world wide employ materials professionals and examples would include General Electric or Rolls Royce (Aerospace), Astrium (Space), Stryker or Boston Scientific (Biomedical) or Siemens (Energy).
