MBA Biotechnology Management

Course Description


Recent advances in life sciences have brought about a transformation of the biotechnology industry, turning it into one of the largest and most steadily growing building blocks of the global economy. The social impact is overwhelming, generating tremendous progress in quality of life, but also strong reactions that need responsible management based on solid ethical principles.

The MBA Biotechnology Management course is designed for bioscience or biological chemistry graduates who wish to enhance their skills in the business world of biotechnology.


The course offers a generic management programme to introduce the theory and practise of management and management skills and includes modules in the areas of marketing, human resources, business strategy and finance. In addition, topical areas of modern biotechnology are covered and the course culminates in an MBA dissertation.

The MBA Biotechnology Management is based in the Department of Biomolecular and Sport Sciences but represents a collaboration between several departments within the faculty of Health and Life Sciences. It aims to improve management skills for graduates who wish to acquire a theoretical and practical understanding of business and management to prepare them for a successful managerial career in the biotechnology and life sciences sectors.


Modules include:

principles of marketing;
leading, developing and managing people;
strategic health care management;
financial analysis and decision making;
genomes and DNA technology;
pharmaceutical discoveries;
current topics in biotechnology and drug discovery;
research methods and dissertation.

Entry Requirements

An Honours degree in a Bioscience or Biological Chemistry based undergraduate course, and students will normally have achieved a 2:1 or above, or an equivalent appropriate qualification. We would normally be looking for study of the following subjects in the final year of an undergraduate degree programme: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Cell Biology.Students whose first language is not English are normally required to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, with no lower than 5.5 in any component, or equivalent. Pre-sessional English is available if required.
