Our Materials Design and Engineering MSc provides an understanding of the role and application of materials. It also examines the science of materials properties.

About this course

The study of materials lies across the engineering and science disciplines. This course focuses on tackling practical industrial problems through knowledge and analytical skill. The insight you develop will bridge the gap between science and engineering.

This course is suitable if you have a science or engineering background. The broad nature of this study means that our graduates go into a variety of roles in a range of industries.

What you'll learn

You will study a range of traditional and modern topics, such as joining technology and nanomaterials. The course will provide you with a high level of understanding of:

  • new material
  • current materials
  • applications of material
  • design issues related to the use of material.

Your development

You will complete an individual research project in the second semester. The projects are often linked to staff research interests and industrial problems. You can also create links to companies to generate a suitable project topic.

You'll get to experience working in a research laboratory with other research students. Depending on the nature of your project, you may prepare and test specimens followed by post-test examination by electron microscopy and surface analysis techniques. Many successful graduates go on to do PhD research with us.

The staff keep their teaching topics up-to-date through their own research activities.

Delivery

You will complete taught modules in the first and second semesters. In the third semester, you will complete a major research project with support from a supervisor. The course will be delivered through a combination of:

  • lectures
  • small group teaching sessions
  • practical sessions.

The School of Engineering has a wide range of attractive facilities. Our chemical engineering facilities include:

  • Bioprocessing laboratory
  • Centre for Process Innovation
  • ExxonMobil Design Suite
  • Hiden Catlab
  • StuBrew.

Chemical Engineering is based in Merz Court. We also provide a Student Common Room and a separate Student Study Space.
