The interest of the proposed master is justified by the lack of undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Oviedo that meet those training needs. Within the studies offered by the University of Oviedo, geographic information systems and / or remote sensing are included in the curricula of Surveying Engineering, Forestry Engineering, superior engineering of Mines, Masters in Geological Hazard Assessment, BS in Geology, BS in Geography (not adapted to the EHEA) and grades in Geomatics and Surveying, engineering degree in Forestry and Natural Environment, engineering degree in mining and energy resources and Masters in Marine Biodiversity (1 subject remote sensing optional) (studies adapted the EHEA). However, the training is basic and it is necessary to develop a graduate teaching program that contemplates the inclusion of GIS and remote sensing to a higher level, including practical applications and immersion in the business world.
From the point of view of professional output, the proposal is justified Masters attending the wide range of professional fields in which the tools of GIS and remote sensing have applications: Master's graduates can apply the techniques and skills acquired in areas multiple as: • Agriculture • Archaeology • Ecology • Forestry • Geography • Geology • Meteorology • Oceanography
And in more specific areas such as: • Urban and spatial planning • Analysis and Environmental Management • Water resources • Logistics and environmental consulting • Civil Engineering • Visualization Techniques • Applied research in the field of remote sensing • Exploration geophysics (mining and oil) • Improved process digital images • Research new sensors
The Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union sets the research priorities in the European Union for the period 2007 to 2013. Among the priorities are several in which remote sensing and GIS application are fundamental for the development of remote sensing and GIS tools is essential. These include: • Information and communication technologies. • Energy. • Environment.
