Course content

Overview
The Master of Science in Speech and Language Sciences is a research-oriented degree which builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in the Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy.
The Master of Science in Speech and Language Sciences comprises primarily independent research, the results of which are presented in a research thesis, which is completed concurrently with one advanced course in either clinical management or research design.
Following the successful completion of an Master of Science in Speech and Language Sciences the graduate is prepared for clinical teaching and supervision, clinical management, clinical research and potentially for assuming leadership roles within the profession.
The Master of Science in Speech and Language Sciences provides New Zealand-trained therapists with the background to apply for qualifications in any overseas location and to initiate research training.
Students may continue their research education with intensive mentoring and support for advanced research culminating in a PhD.

Qualification specific requirements
Candidates must normally have completed a BSLP(Hons) degree or other qualifying programme, with good grades and be approved as a candidate for the degree by the Dean of Science.
A non-clinical, research-only pathway is available to students with a 4-year undergraduate degree in a related discipline.

Qualification structure and duration
Students are required to take one course, CMDS605 Advanced Clinical Practicum, Supervision and Administration, and complete a thesis CMDS695 or CMDS 696 (part-time).
Part II only of the MSc (one course and a thesis) may be completed in one year of full-time study or, with the approval of the Dean of Science, in two to three years consecutive part-time study.
