Course content

This interdisciplinary and innovative master degree responds to the demands for professionals with a technical and comprehensive vision of the urban phenomenon beyond the concept of Cities and train practitioners in a scientific understanding of cities that considers our built environments and the people who inhabit it.

The city is the first economic and social engine worldwide and there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of cities, not only by the social relevance of urban environments but also by the availability of new strategies for city-scale interventions that are enabled by emerging technologies. The Master program goes beyond the Smart City concept as this mainly encompasses the development of information and communication technologies, leaving behind many important urban, social and ecological issues that are addressed in this program.

This program is designed to help planners to build and develop efficient, sustainable and community-based cities and features awareness on the interdisciplinary history of modern cities, urban economics, city development and planning theory, urban ecology, demography and applied problem-solving and research methods related to the city.

Providing a holistic view of the development of the city the program addresses systems by function including - water, food, waste, transport, education, energy as our cities need dynamic, networked, self-regulating systems that take into account complex interactions. Participants will complete the program in 12 months. Participants can finish the program while working , and their final assignment will involve an innovative and comprehensive presentation at the end of the program.
