A Top Accountancy Masters Program The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has consistently ranked among the top accountancy schools in the United States. The Public Accounting Report and Accounting Degree Review have rated the Illinois graduate accounting program as one of the top accountancy masters programs in the United States. See Why Illinois for additional details of our rankings and other compelling reasons why an individual should choose Illinois.
The MS in Accountancy (MSA) program offers a one year accounting degree. Our students include those with limited prior accounting education as well as students with an undergraduate degree in accounting. The MSA core curriculum applies to all of our students. However, for those students who have previously taken significantly equivalent courses to any of those in our core curriculum, we will work with our students to find a suitable replacement to recognize the sufficiency of their prior accounting education. Our MSA program prepares students for success in accounting careers and provides the academic prerequisites for candidates who wish to take the United States Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.
Although successful completion of our students’ academic requirements will always take precedence, our MS in Accountancy program strives for a balanced approach to our students’ experience as captured in our mission and motto. Our ultimate goal? To help every student become a more complete accounting professional by delivering a multi-faceted enrichment experience that focuses on business leadership development.
Why Illinois The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign tradition of excellence in graduate accountancy education began with the awarding of the department’s first master’s degree in 1922 and its first Ph.D. in 1939. One of the largest suppliers of leaders of the accountancy profession, Illinois boasts more partners in the Big-Four CPA firms and more CFOs in Fortune 500 corporations than any other academic institution.
Curriculum The MSA program begins in June each year with Summer Session II. The MSA degree requires 32 semester hours of graduate course work of which at least 20 hours are in graduate-level accounting courses, and at least 4 hours are in a non-accountancy graduate course.
Core Curriculum: The 20 accountancy hours required are ACCY 501 through ACCY 505 (each of the five courses awards 4 hours credit). With the approval of a program adviser, students that have an accountancy undergraduate degree with appropriate course work may substitute other graduate accountancy courses for some or all of the ACCY 501 through ACCY 505 courses.
Application Deadlines The MSA program begins in June of each year. The program will begin to accept applications on November 1, 2015 for the Summer 2016 term. The application deadline is February 1, 2016. All required materials must be received at the MSA Program Office before an application will be reviewed.
Applicants are required to have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. They should have earned a minimum grade average of “B,” or the equivalent, in the last two years of undergraduate study. In addition, applicants must have a minimum academic background in business. All applicants, domestic or international, are required to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). In addition, all applicants whose native language is not English must take the Internet-Based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test.
