Master of Liberal Arts (Visual Culture Research)

Course Description

The visual culture research specialisation of the liberal arts program is a multi-disciplinary field and is the only postgraduate degree of its kind offered in Australia. It combines the humanities and social scientific perspectives of anthropology, art theory and film studies with workshops using visual media and relevant software. It will develop your skills in working with visual materials. You will reach a high level of visual literacy – an ability to analytically grasp visual materials from a range of disciplinary perspectives and an understanding of the key conceptual debates in visual studies.

You will also develop a practical familiarity with a range of visual media and the relevant software for working with visual materials. Through ‘hands on’ exercises, including working alongside leading ethnographic film makers at the University, you will combine these analytical and practical skills, developing the ability and confidence to manipulate visual materials for research related purposes. Our national capital location means that you can access the resources provided through the cultural and collecting institutions and you will have opportunities to attend lectures and seminars and participate in internships in these institutions.
