Course content

The Master of Laws (LLM) is an intermediate professional degree designed for foreign educated lawyers or students holding an undergraduate degree in law or other field. In select states, the LLM degree may allow individuals to take the bar exam. The LLM program at the University of Illinois is full-time for one year or may be split into two one-semester years for employer-sponsored students.

The Illinois LLM program provides a strong foundation to US law and professional life. It is ideal for professionals educated outside the United States with or without a law degree who work with US clients, companies, and regulatory agencies in areas like:
• Human Resources
• Corporate Compliance
• Accounting
• Business and Regulation
• and more
THE ILLINOIS LAW LLM PROGRAM
The core of the LLM program is the fundamentals of US Law, with courses specifically designed for professionals and students educated outside the United States. Core courses include Contracts and Civil Procedure, Legal Writing and Research, and Professional Responsibility.

Beyond the core courses, LLM students select from the nearly 200 classes offered each year, allowing them to further develop expertise within their own specialized fields or interests. These courses are taken alongside the JD students, a hallmark of the Illinois program.

LLM students are also provided individualized counseling and have the opportunity to participate in practical training, including competitions and trial advocacy.
CONCENTRATIONS
Concentrations most applicable to LLMs include:
• Business, Corporate, and Banking Law
• Criminal Law and Procedure
• Employment and Labor Law
• Environmental Law
• Intellectual Property and Technology Law
