Overview The Master of Education endorsed in Inclusive and Special Education is designed to give teachers, educational professionals, counsellors and researchers the opportunity to examine practice and critical issues surrounding the academic and social development of students with diverse learning needs. A research thesis is a compulsory course in the endorsement. The specific goals of the endorsed programme are to enable participants to: *Systematically analyse and engage in research in the field of inclusive and special education *Understand controversies in the fields of inclusive and special education *Critically examine policies and procedures in inclusive and special education *Work effectively with children and young people with special education needs, professionals, parents, and whanau in inclusive and special education
The endorsement aims to develop a rigorous approach to the theory/practice nexus in the field of inclusive and special educational studies. Students will have the opportunity to study in relation to their particular interests and to undertake a three or four-paper thesis. Academic advice and direction will assist students to develop a coherent and relevant programme of study.
Qualification specific requirements Candidates for the Master of Education endorsed in Inclusive and Special Education shall have either: *Qualified for a Postgraduate Diploma Education Inclusive and Special Education *Qualified for a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching or equivalent
Candidates must also be approved by the Dean of Education.
Qualification structure and duration The Master of Education endorsed in Inclusive and Special Education consists of one compulsory course: *EDEM620 Inclusive and Special Education
Two restricted optional courses totalling 1.0 EFTS: *EDEM618 Dyslexia: Identification and Intervention *EDEM624 Autism Spectrum Disorders *EDEM625 Challenging Behaviours: Positive and Effective Management *EDEM685 Special Topic: Culturally Inclusive Pedagogies: Motivating Diverse Learners
Two 15 point research methodology courses: *EDEM693 Introduction to Methodologies and Ethics in Educational Research *EDEM694 Quantitative Research In Education *EDEM697 Qualitative Research in Education *EDEM698 Emergent Research Methodologies
And a thesis: *EDEM691 Master of Education 120 point thesis *EDEM690 Master of Education 90 point thesis plus one additional 30 point course taken from the Master of Education Schedule
Duration The minimum period of enrolment for a full-time candidate is twelve months; the maximum period is two years from the year of first enrolment. The minimum period of enrolment for a part-time candidate is two years; the maximum period is three years from the year of first enrolment.
