Students in our professional Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program will receive advanced education in Athletic Training along with relevant clinical experiences that will better prepare the student for an exciting career as an allied-health professional in addition to further educational opportunities

Students will learn to apply a wide variety of specific knowledge, skills and abilities in evidence-based practice, prevention and health promotion, clinical examination and diagnosis, acute care of injury and illness, therapeutic interventions, psychosocial strategies and referral, healthcare administration, and professional development and responsibility.

The Master of Athletic Training Program features a comprehensive curriculum that has been designed to integrate both formal classroom instruction and hands on, clinical education. The curriculum also prepares students to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. The MAT program at Gannon University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
Lead the Way
Gannon University’s MAT is prepared to support incoming students with the appropriate tools to be successful in the Athletic Training field.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for athletic trainers are expected to grow by 30 percent between 2010 and 2020, much faster than the average for overall occupations. Such employment trends highlight the need for Masters level athletic trainers in order to advance the fields of exercise science and athletic training.

This job outlook highlights the increasingly important role that athletic trainers play in the prevention and care of injuries. From the identification of concussions and injuries in younger athletes to the growth in an increasingly active middle-aged and elderly population, people of all ages will experience a need for the services of qualified athletic trainers. Athletic trainers will continue to experience increasingly significant roles in the management, prevention, recognition and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Features of the Program
The program consists of clinical education learning opportunities both within and outside of the Gannon community and allows for integration of experiential education into the athletic training curriculum.

The program is a total of 59 credits and can be completed in two years.

The MAT program is excited to offer a 5 year (3+2) program for Gannon University students
