Master of Arts in Teaching


Course Description

Overview

The Texas Woman’s University Master of Arts in Teaching degree is especially designed to prepare individuals with a bachelor’s degree for initial teacher certification while also earning a master’s degree. TWU’s MAT program meets the teacher certification standards established by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

The degree is intended for those individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in some field other than education and want to obtain teacher certification while at the same time earning a master’s degree. The MAT consists of a minimum of 32 hours, although more hours may be required if an individual needs leveling classes in a particular teaching field, or needs additional classes in order to pass the state teacher certification exam (TExES) in a particular content area. Currently, teaching certification is available through the MAT in the following teaching fields:

Early Childhood–Grade 6: Bilingual Generalist; ESL Generalist; Special Education Generalist.
Grades 4-8: Bilingual Generalist; English, Language Arts and Reading; Mathematics; Social Studies; Science; ESL Generalist; Special Education Generalist.
Grades 8-12: Biology; Mathematics; English; History; Social Studies; Dance; Computer Science.
Grades 6-12: Family and Consumer Science.
Early Childhood-Grade 12: Health Education; Theatre Arts; Music; Physical Education; Visual Arts

TWU’s MAT curriculum gives graduate students a deeper understanding of their content field. The program develops teachers who are reflective practitioners with strong critical thinking and problem solving skills. The MAT program focuses on:

The multiple roles of a teacher as a researcher/scholar/practitioner
Theory and research-based practices for curriculum design and instruction
Increased content knowledge needed for instruction
Application of appropriate technology in education
Assessment of teaching and learning
Understanding of socio-cultural and learning differences among students
Collaborative leadership to improve schools.

Entry Requirements

In order to be admitted to the MAT program you will need to meet the following criteria:A Bachelor’s DegreeA 3.0 or higher GPA on the last 60 semester hours of college workA 2.75 or higher GPA on all previous college work as of 9-1-2013A completed applicationGraduates of universities outside of the United States where English is not the language of instruction must pass the speaking portion of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a score of at least 26 if your coursework for the previously completed degree was not delivered in English.
