Course content

Archaeological science is taught across four ANU Colleges: the College of Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Asia and the Pacific, the College of Medicine, Biology and Environment and the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. ANU is one of the world’s leading archaeological research and teaching universities. Our archaeological science degrees offer a bridge between the humanities orientation of traditional archaeology and the modern scientific principles, analytical techniques and methods which underpin archaeological research and professional practice. The degrees provide systematic training whether you are from a humanities or science-based background.

The Master of Archaeological Science benefits from strong partnerships with industry. In this degree you can mix personal research projects with opportunities to complete internships in Australia and internationally. Research led teaching is a benchmark of the program – you can design research projects under the supervision of leading researchers and professional practitioners. ANU has world-class research facilities, reference collections and equipment to undertake basic and advanced archaeological fieldwork and laboratory studies. In the Master and Master (research) degrees you may select a broad portfolio of courses or develop an individual research pathway (eg. isotope studies or spatial science in archaeology). From 2012, the Master of Archaeological Science program will offer two specialised degrees in Forensic Archaeology and Palaeopathology, or Quaternary Studies and Palaeoenvironments. Any of the Master of Archaeological Science degrees can be tailored towards a professional career path or research leading to a PhD in archaeological science, or in cognate areas such as quaternary science, forensic science, applied environmental science and natural and cultural heritage management.
