About the course

The Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) in Germany is a joint venture of the University of Cologne Excellence Cluster on Stress Responses in Aging-Associated Diseases (CECAD), the University Hospital Cologne, the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing and the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research. Cologne has emerged as a leading global research cluster with a stellar constellation of institutes and scientists dedicated to ageing research in Life Sciences. We offer up to 6 Master fellowships to highly motivated and talented students holding a B.Sc. degree in Biology or a related subject. The Master fellowship programme is embedded in a cutting-edge research environment and will start on October 1, 2021. Admission to the structured and well-established Biological Sciences Master programme of the University of Cologne is a premise of receiving a Master fellowship. Master fellowships are 800 €/ month and will be awarded for a maximum duration of 1.5 years and until the start of the Master thesis project.

Entry Requirements

We encourage motivated, outstanding candidates that hold a Bachelor degree in biological sciences or a related subject to apply for the CGA Master fellowship programme. Premise of being awarded with a Master fellowship is the admission to the MSc in Biological Sciences programme of the University of Cologne. All candidates require excellent written and spoken English skills (C1 level).


Fees

There are not tuition fees, but a semester contribution of approx 280€.

Where is Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research

Scholarships

Master fellowship holders will be supported with a monthly fellowship of 800 € for the duration of their studies (maximum 1.5 years). During their Master thesis project, they will be equipped with a working contract. All admitted students pick a principal investigator of our internationally renowned faculty as student mentor. Being part of the mentor’s group, Master fellows actively engage in scientific and social activities of the chosen group and have regular advisory meetings with their mentor. Thus, already at an early stage of their scientific career, our students have the unique chance to identify the research field they are most passionate about for their future path as PhD student.

Master students who have recently started their Master studies in the Master of Science in Biological Sciences programme at the University of Cologne and have received excellent grades during the first subject modules are welcome to apply!

Application Procedure

Application for the CGA Master fellowship programme was possible from March 02 – July 15, 2020 for Master studies starting in October 2019. Please note that the application deadline for the MSc in Biological Sciences programme at the University of Cologne was already May 31, 2020 for international candidates!

Application for the Master fellowship programmes takes place via our online application portal.
For the online application you will be asked to provide the following information:

Statement on past and current research interest (250 words)
Statement on motivation to join the Master fellowship programme (250 words)
Specification of your desired mentor (see list of possible mentors in the application portal)
Indication two academic advisors as referees
Provision of CV, certificates, transcripts and other supporting documents as separate pdf files

All candidates will be selected in August 2020, based on the online profiles and submitted documents. Admitted students can start their Master studies as fellowship holders in October 2020.
