Course content

This MSc will suit engineering, mathematics and physical sciences graduates who wish to specialise in the maritime engineering science sector. The core modules, including 'Yacht and High Performance Craft', and 'Sailing Yacht and Powercraft Design', are particularly relevant to the Yacht and Small Craft theme of this course.

Introducing your degree

Our MSc specialises in the analysis, design and performance of yachts, small craft and other high-performance vessels, and will suit graduates of engineering, mathematics and physical sciences. Our engineers from the world renowned Wolfson unit will contribute to your teaching on this course. You will not require a specialised knowledge of this discipline as an introductory module, the Fundamentals of Ship Science, is part of the course.

Overview

In the two semesters, you will fully exercise your practical skills and gain a detailed insight of yacht and high performance craft and sailing yacht and powercraft design, including hull design, sailplan and rig development. You will also learn to apply the latest design tools and methodologies.

The summer months will focus on project work. You will tap into our Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute research network and undertake a final research project using our world-class maritime engineering facilities. The project will involve experimental and practical study and the completion of a dissertation.
