Marine Transport Management - MSc


Course Description

Marine transport moves billions of tonnes of cargo around the world each year. It is one of the most international and critical sectors in the global economy. As a graduate of our course you can work internationally in this diverse industry.

As well as shipping companies and ports, potential employers include:

-Financial services providers
-Regulators
-Handling agents

-Insurance companies
-Ship builders

Our teaching is by lectures, seminars and personal supervision. It is delivered by leading staff based at the University, visiting professors and industrial experts. You will also benefit from industry site visits.

You choose from a variety of marine transport related topics for your dissertation using the research strengths of the School of Marine Science and Technology.

If you don't have a marine background, we recommended that you read one of these books in advance of arriving in Newcastle:

Reeds Sea Transport, Operations and Economics, 6th Edition, Patrick M Alderton, Adlard Coles Nautical, London, 2011
Elements of shipping, 8th Edition, Alan E. Branch, Routledge, London, 2007

Delivery

Seven taught modules worth 100 credits are delivered through semesters one and/or two. A dissertation or research project, worth 80 credits, is undertaken across the three semesters.

Facilities

You have access to dedicated facilities including:
-A student common room
-A computer laboratory

You benefit from a trip on the School's research vessel RV, The Princess Royal in order to experience marine operations in practice. There is also a strong programme of visiting lecturers from industry and site visits.

(Scholarship)

North of England P&I Club Scholarship - Single Award

This award has been funded by the North of England P&I Club (NEPIA) to mark a long standing successful link between Newcastle University and the P&I Marine Insurance group. The award is worth £2,500. Work placement opportunities within the North of England P&I Club may also be available to the successful candidate. The University expects that the scholar would take up these opportunities.

Eligibility

This scholarship is designed for students from the UK who will be studying the MSc Marine Transport with Management. If a suitable UK student is not identifiable, an EU or international student will be considered.Candidates must be able to display a clearly identified desire to work in the marine insurance industry, this could be from work experience, previous study or voluntary work. Candidates must also be able to provide details of people to act as referees. The successful scholar will have to provide a final report on their year of study for the P&I Board.

Entry Requirements

A 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in: engineering; a maritime-related subject; economics; business. You will also be considered on an individual basis if you have non-standard qualifications and/or relevant practical experience.
