The pressures on the oceans and seas and public awareness of the damage being done to marine environments have never been greater than they are now. If you wish to make an effective contribution to the future of marine conservation, the Marine Conservation programme at Aberdeen will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills to work in a range of organisations, such as statutory nature conservation bodies, government regulators, environmental consultancies, non-governmental organisations and research institutes.

Effective conservation of marine biodiversity requires a sound understanding of marine ecosystems and the way they respond to natural changes and the effects of human activities, including direct exploitation and incidental damage. It also requires an appreciation of the range of management options available, how they can be designed and implemented and how they perform in different circumstances.

Our Marine Conservation MSc programme will give you this fundamental and applied knowledge through courses on, for example, marine ecology and ecosystems, population ecology, marine spatial planning and marine conservation management. There is also emphasis on quantitative and computational skills, such as data analysis and geographic information systems (GIS), to give you an enhanced capacity to investigate emerging issue authoritatively. The programme culminates in an independent investigation in which you put these skills into practice.

The programme benefits from contributions from colleagues in Marine Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and environmental consultancies, among others, which helps you to develop your network of professional contacts.

If your career goal is to make a difference in marine conservation, this programme is for you.
