The MA introduces key authors, texts, and critical and theoretical debates that shape our conception of literature from the early Twentieth Century to the present. The core modules cover a generic, chronological and geographical range of literary works, also addressing interdisciplinary connections – with film and philosophy, for example. There are several planned field trips to places of social and cultural importance which are designed to foster contextual approaches to literature. The course would be of interest to anyone currently in education or individuals looking eventually to embark on a MPhil/PhD in English Literature. Assessment is by written coursework, seminar presentations and for students wishing to take the MA, a 20,000 word dissertation within the area of Modern and Contemporary Literature must also be completed.
