Student Profile

I am project leader and field archaeologist with the Heritage Team at the municipality of Utrecht. Whenever an organisation wants to build something in the municipality, an archaeological study first has to be carried out. I go with the team to do the fieldwork; we observe the area, excavate the ground and search for traces. I love working outside, even in the rain.

I often work on building sites, where accidents can happen, so I have to have a number of different certificates, such as in-company emergency assistance and safety training. I also have a medical check-up every year. I sometimes have to work in areas where the ground is polluted, so I have to take special care of my health.

You can choose as an archaeologist to focus on policy. That means, for example, that you assess building applications and decide whether or not an archaeological study has to be carried out. That’s one of the reasons I think it’s good to do a number of fieldwork projects as part of your studies. Getting some experience of working in the practical environment is really important, and it shows you whether or not this is the right kind of work for you.
