About the course

Overview

The MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture offers you an intensive and exciting survey of the literary culture of the 20th and 21st centuries.

You’ll be introduced to key authors, texts, ideas and critical methods from the period, and construct a distinct, individually chosen programme of study from a wide range of options. You’ll develop your research skills and apply these to a substantial piece of independent research.

Taught and supervised by world-leading scholars in one of the UK’s largest research centres in modern English, you’ll gain a foundation for doctoral research in modern literature, as well as transferable skills for related careers in teaching, publishing, arts management and journalism.

Student Profile(s)

Alex

I’m delighted I decided to do a Masters! I was explicitly told when I got the job as Parliamentary Assistant that my MA had made a difference, because it immediately demonstrates that you have an advanced skill set, commitment and dedication to your work, and the ability to produce high-quality written work, too. Having a Master’s degree really sets you out from the crowd in this regard. Beyond the happiness that my MA helped me get a job that I love and find fulfilling, I also met lots of really interesting, intelligent people during my MA who I know will be lifelong friends, and hopefully future academic colleagues! At Master’s level you’re treated differently by academic staff, too, and have lots more opportunities to discuss your study and collaborate on departmental projects. It was a real privilege to have more time to discuss work in depth with members of the English department, who were always available to support my ideas and answer my questions.
