About the course

This MA enables students to explore and examine the rich tradition of early Irish literature and intellectual culture, from the early medieval period and the advent of Christianity until the coming of the Normans at the end of the 12th century. It also enables students to deepen their acquaintance with the language of the period, and to endow them with a set of research skills appropriate to work in this field.

This programme comprises two parts: taught modules (compulsory and elective modules) [60 credits] and a minor thesis [30 credits] [90 credits in total].

Entry Requirements

Applicants must normally have a 2:1 at BA level in Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies or a cognate discipline (e.g. History, Philosophy, Modern Irish, Classics). No previous knowledge of Old Irish is necessary to do this course, although students are required to take Old Irish language as part of the degree. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

Scholarships

Applicants must intend to pursue a full-time taught master’s degree at the university
commencing in the academic year 2017-18 and meet the following eligibility criteria:

1. Satisfy the entry requirements of the Maynooth University taught masters
programme they intend to undertake in 2017-18 and have applied on https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/study-maynooth/postgraduate-studies/fees-funding-scholarships

2. All applicants must have achieved a minimum 2.1 honours undergraduate degree in
order to be considered for a Taught Master’s Scholarship.

3. Applicants will be required to upload their undergraduate degree transcripts for
their level 8 undergraduate honours degree or equivalent to the online application
system before the closing date. Applicants graduating in 2017 who have not yet
received their final degree transcripts must upload their penultimate degree results
into the online application system. Once final degree results are available in June 2017,
these must be uploaded by 1st July 2017 to the https://v2.pac.ie/ course application system
to receive final confirmation of the scholarship award.

The competition is not open to those who have already commenced a taught master’s
programme.

Research master’s programmes are not eligible for support under the scheme and
students interested in research programmes should apply instead for the Maynooth
University John and Pat Hume Doctoral Research Award:

2,000 euros

Eligibility

There are sixty €2,000 Taught Masters Scholarships open across all disciplines of the university on offer to both Maynooth University AND non-Maynooth University graduates. A 2.1 final result or equivalent is required. Conditional offers will be made from mid-May 2017 based on penultimate honours level 8 degree results from summer 2016 if not final results are available.
