MA Media Literacy and Digital Culture (MLDC)

Discover a 21st Century Approach to Media Studies.
In today’s always on, always connected digital media environment it is increasingly important to develop a critical understanding of the mediated stories and images that are thoroughly integrated into our everyday lives. This program focuses on a holistic understanding of media, including production processes and industry practices, critical investigation of content and changing technologies, and the impact of stories and images on audiences. The Master of Arts in Media Literacy and Digital Culture engages students with the media literacy skills necessary to critically analyze the intersections of media and culture while fostering their creativity and social awareness.
With concentrations in Children, Health, and Media and Media and Social Justice, the graduate program in Media Literacy and Digital Culture allows students to explore the relationship between media, culture, and society. The Children, Health, and Media concentration focuses on media impact on the minds, bodies, and relationships of children, tweens, and teens, while the concentration in Media and Social Justice explores the role of media in reinforcing or challenging power and inequality in social and institutional relationships. The capstone experiences provide all MLDC students with the opportunity to put their coursework into practice as they plan, create, and implement media literacy curricula, campaigns, and initiatives for corporate, educational, and nonprofit organizations. The graduates of the Master of Arts program in Media Literacy and Digital Culture will be prepared to find employment as educators, health promotions professionals, and media practitioners along with non-profit, community, and social service mangers.

As they move through the program, MLDC students will have the opportunity to create media literacy materials for corporate, educational, health, and non-profit organizations. As part of their coursework students will produce in-depth presentations, curricula, campaigns, and initiatives. MLDC students also gain hands-on professional experience through capstone courses in their area of interest. By the time they graduate, every MLDC student will showcase their work in a personalized digital portfolio that highlights their media literacy skills, creativity, and critical thinking.

Beyond the traditional curriculum, MLDC students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of media literacy events and initiatives. MLDC offers an orientation workshop the week before classes begin in order to provide students with the foundational knowledge they will need to succeed in the program and the workplace. Throughout the year students can take part in regularly scheduled workshops taught by visiting media literacy professionals. The MLDC program also hosts an annual Media Literacy Symposium focused on current issues in the field.

With fall and spring acceptance and convenient 8-week sessions scheduled year round, MLDC courses combine face-to-face once-a-week evening classes with online sessions, allowing students to schedule their coursework around professional and personal obligations. MLDC students can choose to pursue either the Children, Health, and Media (CHM) concentration or the Media and Social Justice (MSJ) concentration. Full-time students can complete the degree in one year, taking two classes each module while part-time students take one class each module and finish in two years.
