Course Description


The course covers an in-depth discussion of the most influential theories and methodologies in the field, and provides an introduction to the latest debates and concerns; these include issues arising from cinema’s textual properties and questions regarding the medium’s wider social impact.


Core modules: Classical film theory and textual analysis; key skills 1: research in film studies; key skills 2: preparing for the dissertation; post-classical film theory: history, reception, cinephilia; dissertation; 2 optional modules from: current issues in film distribution and exhibition; film policy: national and global perspectives; contemporary science-fiction cinema; screen stars in context; School of Humanities or Winchester School of Art MA module.
