Student Profiles

Dan Walker - Sports journalist, broadcaster and MA Broadcast Journalism graduate

I did the Broadcast Journalism MA at Sheffield. The most valuable part of the course was the work experience. That gave me a real idea of what working in the industry would be like. When I did get a job, I felt like I was already up and running.

Over the years I’ve worked in local and regional radio and TV and was a presenter on the BBC News Channel for a few years before moving into network TV about 12 years ago. I currently present BBC Breakfast three days a week and host Football Focus every Saturday.

Jacob Waters

Graduated in 2021

"I'm currently working at Global as a broadcast journalist in the North-West newsroom. I report regionally for Capital, Heart, Smooth and XS Manchester whilst reporting nationally for LBC News and LBC - I also edit bulletins and read for Capital, Smooth, Heart and XS in the North West region.

Thanks to the excellent training and support we'd received from staff in the department, when an industry professional from Greatest Hits Radio visited for a day, it led to me getting freelance shifts with them. I worked on the weekends reading for GRH during term time, giving me the necessary experience to get my first full time job in radio. In June 2022 I started my role at Global, becoming the youngest newsreader on a staff contract in the company.

I feel like I learnt the most from news days - it's where we put everything we'd learned in the classroom into practice, we responded to breaking news and we got to learn from industry experts.

There's still no feeling quite like the sense of accomplishment when the sequence show starts to play on a news day and you've put 100% into the day. Going out to celebrate with your course mates afterwards, still riding the rush, and talking about everything that happened throughout the day is a feeling that all alumni I've spoken to have been able to relate to.

Thankfully, we were equipped with all of the skills we need to enter the industry but above all I've made lifelong friends and memories that I'll always cherish, with both my course mates and the lecturers Lynn and Colin."

Maisie Marston

Graduated in 2021

"After graduating I started as a Journalist at BBC Radio Berkshire.

My role includes reporting, news reading and producing our programmes. Sheffield’s news days gave me a chance to build up a portfolio of radio work and hone my audio skills, which I used to take my first steps in the industry.

Lynn’s radio sessions helped me to realise I had a passion for making radio - I use all of the radio package making and writing skills I learnt at University every week! The course is hard work, but there is lots of support from your tutors and amazing industry connections too."

Cici Chow

Graduated in 2021

Cici Chow is a Journalist for China Global Television Network (CGTN). She graduated from MA Broadcast Journalism in 2022.

"I am now a journalist in the New Media department of China Global Television Network (CGTN).

"This was such an important year for me! I was given work placements with ITV Tonight in Manchester, Global Radio in Leeds, Bauer Radio and The Sheffield Star, producing and publishing some great work.

"The internship experience in an international context helped me to strengthen my professional skills, round off my study abroad and find a job that I was happy with when I got back to China. It was an unforgettable experience for me to study abroad and I would recommend it to anyone."
