This course helps you explore how arts organisations, cultural spaces, and visual and performing arts projects are managed in different social, political and economic environments.
You will strengthen your knowledge and awareness of arts policies in different regional, national and international circumstances while gaining advanced organisational and marketing skills. This prepares you for life as a professional project manager, a PhD researcher or to work in other career sequels.
This course is divided into three trimesters to allow students to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's qualification.
Modules include: Strategic Marketing for the Arts; Managing Events and Projects; Research in Practice; Final Presentation or Dissertation.
Option modules are shared within the Art Based Masters Programme. These include Discourses in Art & Design, Contemporary Philosophy and Aesthetics, Creative Publishing and Public Dissemination, Social Practice in the Visual Arts, Photography as Research, Queer strategies and practices, Well-being and Mindfulness: Environment and Context, Models and Methods of Curatorial Practice, Arts Policy and Cultural Planning, Technical Methods, Workshop Practice and Learning and Small Arts Business Set Up.
The emphasis on professional practice in teaching and the final project are intended to give the students practical experience in their chosen field of cultural activity and opportunities to network and deepen their understanding of how organisations, projects or events work; students complete essays, presentations and practical collaborative work.
On completion of the course you will be more critically aware of the regional, national and international context in which arts organisations and projects operate. You will be able to pursue a career in managing arts organisations and spaces, working within a management team on large scale events and festivals or be a freelance arts project manager. Jobs might include gallery administrator, arts officer, theatre manager, festival administrator or manager of an arts organisation.
